For Fritz Leiber,
who enjoyed the original Well saga,
but left us before this one was done, and
likewise for my old friend Reg Bretnor,
also gone too soon, my writing opposite of sorts,
who packed more laughs into fewer words than
any science-fiction writer in history.
The worst thing about growing old
is the increasing number of missing,
and missed, friends.
The Kraang had good reason to be complacent.

But after four billion years of meaningless existence drifting to and from among the stars, finding even vast blocks of time meaningless, it wasn't used to thinking that time, any time, was quickly running out.

Changing of the Guard

Immortal, unchanging, the external survivor, Nathan Brazil had tired of his long duty as the guardian of the Well World and had enlisted Mavra Chang, space pilot and adventurer, as his companion and equal, sharing with her some of his power to control the universe's destiny.

But over the millennia, Brazil and Chang had become estranged, and when they were once again called to the Well, each went alone.  What they found was a Well World changed in ways it should not have been. It was not just that the local inhabitants had put a price on their heads or that Brazil and Chang were constantly symied in their separate journeys to the Well of Souls.  Evolution itself had diverged from its preset course - and that was impossible.

Brail sensed that some force beyond local animosity was at work, thwarting him from reaching his goal, and he was determined to find out just what that force was and how it could have changed the elaborate programming of the Well.  But the changes that had so affected the Well World were beginning to change the unchangeable Nathan Brazil - and if the watchman himself could altered, the universe might be left without any guardian at all...

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my goodreads icon goodreads page. I almost never do reviews, but I use this site to catalogue books.
See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
